Whispers of Titan’s past echo here at Lacul IOR. Welcome to a green escape nestled in Bucharest’s Sector 3. This isn’t just a lake. Lacul IOR is the heart of Parcul Alexandru Ioan Cuza. Many locals still call the park IOR. This is after the nearby Întreprinderea Optică Română factory.
Imagine this area before 1965. A former brick factory stood here. The city decided to create a green space for the residents of the Titan neighborhood. Between 1965 and 1970, the area transformed into what you see today. Lacul IOR became the park’s centerpiece.
Lacul IOR is a natural lake. It is split into two sections by the Liviu Rebreanu bridge. These are known as Titan Lake 1 and Titan Lake 2. Five islands dot the lake’s surface. Each has its own story. There is Insula Pensionarilor and Insula Artelor. You can also find Insula Câinilor, Insula Pescarilor, and Insula Rațelor.
Insula Câinilor is special. It is a 2.6-hectare space. Here, dogs can run free. This is a unique area where pets can enjoy off-leash freedom.
The park and Lacul IOR have faced challenges. In 2005, a controversial decision retroceded 12 hectares of the park to private owners. Since 2019, this area has suffered. Illegal deforestation, fires, and tree poisoning have occurred.
Between early 2022 and late August 2023, 15 fires broke out in the retroceded area. Over two hectares of green space burned. Some fires were accidental. Others were intentionally set. In September 2024, two people were investigated for illegally cutting down 50 trees.
Despite these issues, the community is fighting back. Local groups have launched initiatives to protect the park. They are urging authorities to prevent further destruction. Activists are pushing to reclaim the retroceded land. They want to restore it as a protected public green space.
Take a moment to appreciate Lacul IOR. It is a testament to nature. It shows the resilience of community. Remember the history. Respect the efforts to preserve this urban oasis. Enjoy the peace and beauty of Lacul IOR.
