Established in 1667 Lachine’s name is a curious tale. French explorer Robert Cavelier de La Salle hoped to find a passage to China. His unsuccessful quest earned him and his men the mocking title les Chinois the Chinese. This eventually morphed into Lachine. Lachine is more than just a name though. It’s a place steeped in history.

Imagine the Lachine Canal in its heyday a bustling waterway. Goods flowed from the Old Port of Montreal all the way to Lake Saint-Louis. This 14.5-kilometre artery was key to Montreal’s rise as a major port. The canal’s construction wasn’t easy. Attempts started in 1689 but were thwarted by Iroquois attacks. It wasn’t until 1821 that construction finally began in earnest. The Lachine Canal bypassed the treacherous Lachine Rapids. This made transportation much simpler.

The canal’s impact extended far beyond navigation. Its deepening in the 1840s brought industrial growth. Factories lined its banks taking advantage of hydraulic power. Industries such as wood iron and steel flourished. The canal fuelled the growth of neighborhoods like Griffintown St Henri and Pointe St Charles. Lachine became a major industrial centre. Over 20% of Montreal’s workforce found jobs in its factories.

The canal’s story isn’t all smooth sailing. Industrial waste polluted the water. The arrival of railways and steam power gradually lessened the canal’s importance. Its role changed. By the mid-20th century larger ships needed a bigger canal. The St Lawrence Seaway replaced it in 1959. The canal closed to shipping in 1970. The industrial heart of Lachine fell silent.

But Lachine’s story doesn’t end there. The Lachine Canal National Historic Site now thrives. It offers recreational activities like kayaking and cycling. The once-industrial landscape now has modern lofts. The area is a testament to Lachine’s resilience. It shows its ability to adapt and reinvent itself. Lachine transformed from an industrial powerhouse to a vibrant community. It’s a place where history and progress meet. A legacy of exploration industry and rejuvenation.
