Gazing across the Lombard plains, can you envision a village whose very name whispers of creamy abundance? Lacchiarella. It means “little dairy” in the local dialect, a testament to the rich milk production that once defined this region. Lacchiarella, nestled south of Milan, is more than just a charming town. It’s a place steeped in history, a place where Roman roads once connected Mediolanum (Milan) to Ticinum (Pavia). In fact, the nearby Cascina Decima, a modern Lombard court, marked the tenth mile from Mediolanum, giving it its name, Ad Decimum. Lacchiarella’s roots trace back to Roman times, flourishing after the reclamation of the plains. But peace wouldn’t last. From the 5th century onwards, waves of invaders—Huns, Goths, Lombards, Franks, and Hungarians—swept across the land. The Hungarians, in 898, left Lacchiarella in ruins. The Milanese, determined to protect their territory, built a formidable castle at Lacchiarella, complete with a fortress, towers, and a moat. They held it until 1275, when economic pressures forced them to dismantle it, along with many other castles. In the 13th century, Matteo Visconti, lord of Milan, rebuilt the fortress, the very structure that now houses Lacchiarella’s Town Council. Even the Black Death, so vividly depicted by Manzoni in “The Betrothed,” couldn’t extinguish Lacchiarella’s spirit. The town rebounded, becoming a vital trading center for the surrounding area. In 1786, Lacchiarella became part of the province of Pavia. During the Risorgimento, Lacchiarella’s citizens displayed remarkable bravery. Men like Gaetano Tibaldi, who defended Venice in 1849, and the young Giambattista Vigo, a mere thirteen years old, who fought for Rome the same year. Then there were the Tessera brothers, Federico, one of Garibaldi’s Thousand, and Erminio. Lacchiarella’s religious heritage is also rich. The Oratory of San Martino, dedicated to the bishop of Tours, dates back to the 16th century. Destroyed and rebuilt several times, it was restored in 1958 by Monsignor Felice Falcetti. Admire the bronze doors he commissioned, depicting scenes from San Martino’s life, and the exquisite frescoes within. The main church, Santa Maria Assunta, built in 1430, was demolished and reconstructed in the 17th century. Consecrated in 1603 by Cardinal Federico Borromeo, it became the prepositural parish after the suppression of the Pieve di Decimo. Inside, you’ll find a revered image of the Madonna. The Oratory of San Rocco, founded in 1565 by San Carlo Borromeo for the confraternity of the Disciplini, houses a wealth of art. From a primarily agricultural village, Lacchiarella has transformed into a thriving industrial and commercial hub. Yet, amidst the modern hustle, the whispers of the past still echo. The Rocca stands as a testament to Lacchiarella’s enduring strength.
