In the early days, it was just called the Lake of the Ouachas, but when German settlers arrived in the 18th century, the name changed to the Lake of the Germans – translated to Lac des Allemands in French. It’s a shallow lake, only about 10 feet deep at its deepest point, and it flows into the Gulf of Mexico through a series of bayous. It’s famous for its catfish. The town just southeast, also called Des Allemands, is known as the ‘Catfish Capital of the Universe’! The catfish spawn in the Lac des Allemands from May to September. The lake area is rich with different types of fish, like bass, crappie, and bream, thanks to its cypress swamps and the variety of habitats for fish.
