“Lost cities,” a grizzled fisherman muttered, casting his line into the still waters of Lake Pontchartrain. “That’s what these wetlands hold.” We stand at LaBranche Wetland Watchers Park, a place reclaimed by nature, yet echoing with the whispers of a vanished community. LaBranche Wetland Watchers Park isn’t just a park. It’s a testament to the resilience of nature and a stark reminder of human ambition clashing with the power of the environment. In the 1970s, developers envisioned a luxurious lakeside suburb here, complete with tennis courts and shopping malls. They imagined a “Bayou Beverly Hills” rising from the swamp. They sold plots in the “LaBranche Industrial Park,” conveniently omitting details like the 15 feet of water covering the land. The U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development soon investigated the Walker Land Company and other developers for these misleading practices. Ultimately, wetland preservation policies shifted the planned levee, making development financially impossible and leaving those who bought property with submerged, worthless lots. LaBranche Wetland Watchers Park stands as a monument to this failed dream. But the land holds an even older story. In 1915, a powerful hurricane ravaged the area, wiping out the original community of LaBranche. Survivors clung to rooftops and trees, later retrieving bodies from the wreckage. This tragic history underscores the volatile nature of this landscape. Today, LaBranche Wetland Watchers Park offers more than just a glimpse into a lost past. It serves as an outdoor classroom. It provides a place for recreation with planned fishing piers, volleyball courts, and a canoe launch. The park was named in honor of Harry Hurst science teacher Barry Guillot and his students, who adopted the land for educational purposes. This dedication highlights the park’s commitment to education and conservation, reminding us of the importance of understanding and protecting this delicate ecosystem. Ironically, one of the park’s outdoor classrooms, donated by Dow, was destroyed by fire in 2021. Though it withstood multiple hurricanes, this act of vandalism serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced in preserving this valuable resource. LaBranche Wetland Watchers Park stands as a powerful symbol. It symbolizes the interplay between nature and human endeavor, a place where the past informs the present, and where the future of our wetlands hangs in the balance.
