What is a “Laakkanal”? Is it a fish? A special kind of boat? The Laakkanal is actually a waterway, a small river if you will, right here in Rostock. It stretches for about 5 kilometers, winding its way through the city. The Laakkanal starts its journey south of Diedrichshagen, flowing eastward. It passes by Lichtenhagen, gracefully flowing under the bustling city Autobahn. Its journey continues south, hugging the Warnowwerft, before it finally merges with the Unterwarnow. Despite its peaceful appearance, the Laakkanal is actually classified as an artificially created waterway. The environment around the Laakkanal is quite diverse. The upper reaches are characterized by agricultural landscapes. As it flows further, urban areas start to dominate the landscape, with their runoff influencing the water. And after it crosses the city Autobahn and the railway line, you’ll find charming allotment gardens lining its banks. So, the next time you’re near the Laakkanal, take a moment to appreciate this hidden gem of Rostock. It’s a testament to the city’s close relationship with water and a reminder of the delicate balance between nature and urban life.
