Ga Mashie, Osu, Teshie, La and Nungua. These are the Ga coastal townships. They are the foundations of contemporary Accra. La is one of them. It holds its own story in the larger narrative of Accra’s evolution.

La began as one of several Ga towns. The Ga people themselves have a history that some trace back to western Nigeria. They migrated and rose to power in the Accra region around the 13th century. These Ga communities shaped the city we know today.

Around 1650 and 1680, Europeans arrived and built fortified trading posts along the coast. The English built Fort James. The Dutch built Fort Crevecoeur. The Danish built Christiansborg Castle. La and other Ga towns grew near these forts. They thrived on the emerging trade.

The word “Accra” actually comes from the Akan word “Nkran”. It means ants. It referred to the many anthills in the area. Over time, it became the name for the people living on the Accra plains.

La, like other Ga towns, became a center of trade and culture. The Ga people welcomed newcomers. They integrated different groups into their society. This mixing of cultures helped shape the unique identity of La.

The Ga people were organized into six independent towns including La. Each town had a stool. It served as the central object of Ga ritual and war magic.

Today, La is part of the Greater Accra Region. The region has the smallest area of Ghana’s 16 administrative regions. Yet, it is the most populated. In 2021, the population was 5455692 people.

La has evolved from an independent Ga town. It is now a vital part of the bustling Greater Accra Region. It still carries the legacy of its past.

The Ga people celebrate the Homowo festival. The festival literally means “hooting at hunger”. It originated centuries ago. It remembers a great famine that hit the Ga people in the sixteenth century. The festival is mainly a food festival. It celebrates the passing of that terrible period in Ga history. It takes place in August every year. It is celebrated by all the Ga clans, including those in La.

The Adangbe people from Ada celebrate the Asafotu festival. This is also called “Asafotufiam”. It is an annual warrior’s festival celebrated by Ada people. It commemorates the victories of the warriors in battle. It is a memorial for those who fell on the battlefield. The warriors dress in traditional battle dress. They stage a mock battle. The festival also coincides with the harvest cycle. These include purification ceremonies.

Today, La is more than just a historical site. It is a living community. It contributes to the vibrant culture of Accra. Its history is woven into the fabric of the city.
