A grand tribute in bronze and marble. That’s the Monument to Alfonso XII here in Retiro Park. It’s not just a statue, it’s a stage, a theater of history frozen in time. La Universidad Complutense a Alfonso XII is a part of this grand spectacle. The monument itself rose from a national contest in 1902, a project championed by the Queen Mother Maria Christina of Austria to honor her son, King Alfonso XII. Architect José Grases Riera envisioned this magnificent colonnade embracing a tranquil pond, crowned by the king on horseback. Tragically, Grases Riera didn’t live to see his masterpiece completed, passing away in 1919. Architect Teodoro Anasagasti stepped in, respectfully preserving the original vision. Over twenty sculptors contributed their skills to this massive undertaking, each adding a piece to the puzzle. La Universidad Complutense a Alfonso XII is among these contributions, a testament to the king’s connection with education. The monument, funded by public donations, was finally unveiled on June 6, 1922. The sheer scale of the monument is breathtaking: 30 meters high, 86 meters long, and 58 meters wide. At the heart of it all is King Alfonso XII, immortalized in bronze atop his steed, a creation of Mariano Benlliure from 1904. Surrounding him, allegorical figures represent peace, liberty, and progress. As you look closer, you’ll discover the intricate details, the four stone lions guarding the steps down to the lake, the bronze mermaids beneath the pedestals, and even the ornamentation of the friezes. La Universidad Complutense a Alfonso XII stands among these figures, a symbol of knowledge within this grand narrative.
