La Trinité, a town nestled in the Paillon valley, holds a strategic geographical importance. Its history is rich and unique. While the area has existed since antiquity, La Trinité became an autonomous commune on January 30, 1818. This happened under King Victor Emmanuel. It was initially named La Trinité-Victor to honor him.
Before the 17th century, the area between Roma and Rostit was called Ariane-Èze. As the population grew, the residents wanted their own chapel. They did not want to travel to Èze for mass and other religious ceremonies. In 1617, they were granted permission. The “Trinité” chapel was built. Don Jacques Fighièra, the curate of Èze, officiated there for seven years.
In 1625, residents could register births and attend services in Drap. During the French Revolution, the French troops imposed an administration. The inhabitants requested separation from Èze. Petitions increased with support from influential figures. A cemetery was built in 1805. In 1808, the chapel was officially declared a subsidiary church. King Victor Emmanuel I made the village a commune on January 30, 1818. He added “Victor” to its name. This led to the birth of La Trinité Victor. It also established a legal and administrative organization.
In 1951, under Mayor Louis Lepeltier, the commune and the hamlet of Laghet merged. They took on the name La Trinité. La Trinité’s location has always shaped its history. It lies on the ancient “Route Royale”. This route is also known as the “Salt Road”. It connects Nice to Turin. It is also on “La Via Julia”. This is a Roman road linking Italy to Spain.
