In 1964, amidst the evolving landscape of Madrid, a beacon of hope emerged: the Hospital Universitario La Paz. La Paz wasn’t just a hospital. It was a symbol, marking 25 years of peace after the Spanish Civil War. Today, as you stand before this sprawling complex in the neighborhood that now shares its name, La Paz stands as a testament to resilience and progress. La Paz quickly became Spain’s first modern hospital center. It became a hub of medical innovation, setting the stage for advanced healthcare in the country. Imagine the buzz in 1964 as the doors first opened, welcoming patients into a space designed for healing and hope. This massive complex, covering over 235,000 square meters, consists of a network of 20 buildings. It encompasses four large hospitals: the General Hospital, the Maternal Hospital, the Children’s Hospital, and the Hospital of Traumatology and Rehabilitation. In 2005, Hospital Cantoblanco joined the network, followed by Hospital Carlos III in 2013, further expanding La Paz’s reach. The Children’s Hospital at La Paz holds a unique distinction. It is the only center in Spain offering every medical and surgical subspecialty for pediatric care. It serves as a national reference center for 25 pathologies, reflecting its specialized expertise. Did you know that in 2015 alone, La Paz treated over 46,000 inpatients and more than 218,000 emergency patients? The hospital handled over one million outpatient consultations and performed an astounding 55,000 surgeries, many involving complex procedures like organ transplants. This incredible volume of activity is made possible by a dedicated team of around 7,400 professionals. They work tirelessly within a cutting-edge infrastructure, equipped with the latest high-tech equipment and diagnostic tools. La Paz also boasts a strong connection to academia. In 1970, it became a teaching hospital in collaboration with the Autonomous University of Madrid. This partnership fostered a spirit of learning and innovation, shaping future generations of medical professionals. La Paz continues to evolve. As we stand here, plans are underway for a major redevelopment. While the iconic round tower, a birthplace for countless Madrid residents, will be preserved, it will take on a new role as administrative offices.
