High above the city, a challenge awaits. La “M” beckons hikers to conquer its slopes. La “M” is more than just a peak in the Chipinque Ecological Park. It’s a symbol of Monterrey’s adventurous spirit. La “M” stands proudly at 2030 meters above sea level, the second highest of Chipinque’s three main summits. It’s a mere 15 minutes from the bustling heart of Monterrey, nestled at the edge of the Sierra Madre Oriental. The journey to La “M”‘s summit is a rewarding 3.9 km hike. As you ascend, the city unfolds beneath you. You can spot the iconic Cerro de la Silla, another Monterrey landmark. The contrasting view of the city against the backdrop of the Cumbres de Monterrey National Park (PNCM) is breathtaking. The trail to La “M” begins at the “Meseta” parking lot. The initial 1.5 km is a gentle warm-up. Then, the path steepens, zigzagging across a dry creek bed. Eventually, you’ll reach a fork. One path leads to “Ventana” and “Antenas”. The other, towards the west, leads you to La “M”. This section offers a mix of uphill and downhill stretches. You’ll pass through a narrow passage between rock walls, a prelude to the beauty that awaits. The trail continues its undulating path until you reach the “chorreadero”. This steep ravine of loose rocks requires careful footing. A helmet is recommended. Cables are in place to assist you through this challenging section. Emerging from the “chorreadero”, you are rewarded with an incredible panoramic vista. The Sierra Madre stretches to the south. “Huasteca” and “La Calle” mountains rise to the west. To the east, you can see the rest of Chipinque’s peaks: “Antenas”, “Ventana”, and “Copete de las Águilas”, along with Cerro de la Silla. To the north, the “Mitras” and “Topo Chico” mountains complete the 360-degree view. The final stretch to the summit requires scrambling over large boulders. Gloves and a helmet offer added protection. The scramble is not overly difficult. There are good handholds, and the terrain is not entirely vertical. However, caution is key. Before the true summit, you’ll encounter a false summit. Descend slightly, cross a narrow passage, and scramble westward towards the cross that marks La “M”‘s peak. The descent follows the same path. Be mindful of fatigue. Take extra care in the scrambling sections. Facing the rocks during the descent, especially with a backpack, is advised. La “M” offers a challenging yet accessible adventure. It’s a chance to experience the raw beauty of the Sierra Madre, just minutes from the city. The panoramic views and sense of accomplishment at the summit make the journey truly unforgettable.
