Did you know that beneath the red tile roof of La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles lies a history spanning centuries? This isn’t just any church. It’s the oldest Roman Catholic church in Los Angeles. Built on the very spot where the original Nuestra Señora Reina de los Ángeles Asistencia once stood. That original structure served the 44 pobladores who founded El Pueblo de la Reina de los Ángeles in 1781. For years they traveled miles to San Gabriel Mission for services. Imagine the arduous journey. The Franciscan priests saw the need for a local church. In 1784 they built the Asistencia a small adobe building. It served as an extension of the mission providing religious services. The Asistencia also produced food for the San Gabriel Mission.

As Los Angeles grew the Asistencia crumbled. In 1811 the people petitioned for a new chapel. Bureaucracy delayed the process for years. Finally on August 15 1814 the cornerstone for La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles was laid. Construction was plagued by setbacks. The river flooded the plaza in 1815. The entire plaza was moved to higher ground. Work resumed slowly due to funding shortages. The San Gabriel Mission appealed for donations across California’s mission system. This proved successful. La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles was completed in 1822. The name was later changed to La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles. The new church was officially dedicated on December 8 1822. It didn’t become a full parish until 1826.

For fifty years La Placita as it’s affectionately known was the only Catholic church in Los Angeles. This little church suffered its share of troubles. Heavy rains in 1859 caused the roof to leak. The front of the church collapsed. It was completely rebuilt in 1861. The original chapel remains intact. A larger church was added in 1912. This holds up to 1000 parishioners. The complex includes other buildings designed in the style of a Franciscan mission with Moorish influences.

The original frescoes depicting angels and Our Lady are gone. They were painted over in 1912 and completely covered in the 1950s. Today a new mosaic by Isabel Piczek stands in their place. It depicts the Annunciation. This links La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles to Saint Francis of Assisi. Father Juan Crespí named the Los Angeles River El Rio de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles de Porciúncula in his honor. La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles stands as a testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of Los Angeles. It’s a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and a California Historical Landmark. It remains an active church serving a primarily Latino congregation. This church is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living reflection of the city’s rich history. It’s a place where faith and community intertwine. A beacon of hope and a cherished landmark. Step inside and feel the weight of history.
