The Houston Texas Temple is located in Spring Texas. It serves over forty-four thousand Latter-day Saints. These members are from east Texas and southwest Louisiana. The Houston Texas Temple is the 97th operating temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The announcement that the LDS Church would build a temple in Houston happened in September 1997. Then the search began for a good site. A developer owned the chosen site but was unwilling to sell initially. Years earlier the developer faced financial difficulties. He promised God that he would pay him back if he avoided ruin. When the developer learned about the temple he decided to sell the land. This was his way of paying God back.

Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated the Houston Texas Temple on August 26 2000. The temple has 33970 square feet. It includes two ordinance rooms and two sealing rooms.

Hurricane Harvey caused significant flood damage in 2017. The church announced its closure for renovations in October 2017. M Russell Ballard rededicated the temple on April 22 2018 after renovations.

The Houston Texas Temple closed in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic. This closure included all the church’s other temples.

The Houston Texas Temple shares a resemblance with the old Washington Chapel. The Washington Chapel was built by the LDS Church in 1933. It was located in downtown Washington D.C. The Washington Chapel was the most visible symbol of the LDS Church in the national capital. This lasted until the dedication of the Washington D.C. Temple in 1974. The Washington Chapel featured a golden angel blowing a trumpet on its spire. This symbol is typically reserved for temples. The Unification Church bought the Washington Chapel in 1977. This was 20 years before the Houston Texas Temple announcement.
