Was La Duchère always a bustling neighborhood? No. Before the 1960s La Duchère was largely farmland. Then came a massive transformation. This is La Duchère a neighborhood in Lyon’s 9th arrondissement. It’s a story of change adaptation and resilience.

In the 14th century a castle stood here. La Duchère Castle was renovated and expanded over centuries. By the 20th century it was abandoned and eventually demolished in the 1970s. Only remnants of a 17th-century wash house remain.

La Duchère was also a key part of Lyon’s defenses. From 1832 to 1874 it was one of 24 fortified locations. The fort here protected Lyon from attacks and bandits. The fort ceased military use in 1957. It later served as a recruitment center then housed Algerian repatriates. Much of the fort was destroyed.

The 1960s brought drastic changes. Mayor Louis Pradel launched a large-scale housing project. The goal was to alleviate Lyon’s housing crisis. Architect François-Régis Cottin designed much of the new La Duchère. Between 1962 and 1963 thousands of new homes appeared.

La Duchère’s population initially boomed. It reached 20000 in 1970. Many families relocated here. The population included Algerian repatriates known as Pieds-Noirs. A monument from Oran was even moved here in 1968.

The population changed over time. By 1999 only 12400 residents remained. The number of households decreased. The percentage of foreign residents rose from 5.5% in 1975 to 17% in 1990. Unemployment was also high at 14% in 1990. A major urban renewal project began in the early 2000s.

The Grand Projet de Ville addressed many issues. Many high-rise buildings were demolished. About 1500 homes were replaced with new ones. The project aimed to improve social mix and create better living spaces. New schools a gymnasium a library and an athletics hall were built. The MJC was also renovated.

The transformation continued. The Parc du Vallon a 11-hectare park opened in 2014. In 2013 La Duchère received recognition as an eco-neighborhood. Today La Duchère continues to evolve. It’s a neighborhood that has faced challenges but always adapted. It’s a neighborhood that has transformed and continues transforming. It’s more than just buildings. It’s a community a history a place with unique stories to tell.
