Step back in time. Picture the year 1945. World War II is ending. La Crescenta First Baptist Church wasn’t a grand building yet. It was a small gathering of people in a home on Mary Street. Fifteen charter members. They had a vision. A church in a family-friendly neighborhood close to schools. They called themselves First Baptist Church at La Crescenta.

Their foresight was remarkable. They started small. Services were held in Adolph and Leotine Gronlund’s home. This small group of Baptists mostly of Swedish descent laid the foundation for a thriving community. Their faith and vision were the cornerstones of this future.

In 1946 a sanctuary opened at 4409 La Crescenta Avenue. The emphasis was on the Bible family and education. This focus shaped the church’s identity. The church aimed to provide spiritual guidance from childhood to old age. Bernard A. Travaille a senior pastor served for almost 30 years. He guided the congregation through many changes.

The church grew. A new sanctuary was built at the current location. A Christian education building was added at the corner of La Crescenta and Community Avenue. The 1971 earthquake tested their faith. There was minor damage. Yet the church remained strong a testament to their resilience. Ray Heumann a longtime member said God kept their doors open.

The church’s mission work is noteworthy. Over the years La Crescenta First Baptist Church sent out more than 100 missionaries. These missionaries spread their faith both in the United States and around the world. This dedication to spreading the word remains a key part of their identity.

Today La Crescenta First Baptist Church continues its ministry. It shares its facilities with Christ Armenian Church and New Song Korean Church. The church hosts numerous programs. From Bible studies to youth activities the church engages the community. A Fall Festival a Mother’s Day Out program and support groups for various needs showcase the church’s involvement.
