It’s a picturesque sight, with its whitewashed houses stacked one atop the other, each seemingly closer to the sky than the last. This village, though small, is the beating heart of Valle Gran Rey, La Gomera. Don’t let its size fool you. La Calera might be small, but it’s the administrative center of the municipality. The lifeblood of the region courses through its narrow streets. From here, the rugged GM-1 road snakes its way through the ancient Garajonay National Park, connecting La Calera to the island’s capital, San Sebastián de la Gomera. A challenging hiking trail, with 68 hairpin turns, ascends from the village, promising breathtaking views from the peak of La Merica mountain.
