Ever wondered what it feels like to be swallowed by sand?

Welcome to La Brava in Punta del Este. La Brava is more than just a beach. It is an iconic landmark on the Atlantic Ocean side of the peninsula.

La Brava is one of the two main beaches in Punta del Este. The other one is Playa Mansa. Punta del Este sits at the mouth of the Río de la Plata. It is in the highly touristed Maldonado department.

Look around you at La Brava. Notice anything unusual? Rising from the sand are colossal fingers. This is “La Mano”. It means “The Hand” in Spanish. Some people call it “Los Dedos” or “The Fingers”. Others know it as “Hombre emergiendo a la vida”. This translates to “Man Emerging into Life”.

The story of La Mano de Punta del Este began in the summer of 1982. The Chilean artist Mario Irarrázabal was present. He attended the first annual International Meeting of Modern Sculpture in the Open Air in Punta del Este. There were nine sculptors in total. Irarrázabal was the youngest.

Irarrázabal was inspired to create a sculpture of a hand “drowning”. It served as a warning to swimmers. The waters at La Barra were better for surfing due to rougher waves. Solanas was much more suited for swimming and windsurfing.

Irarrázabal completed the project in just six days. He faced delays from the strong southeast wind. This wind is common in Punta del Este. The fingers are made of concrete and plastic. Steel bars and metal mesh reinforce them. A degradation-resistant solvent covers the plastic.

Throughout that summer, sculptors worked on their creations. Only Irarrázabal’s sculpture remains on the beach today. La Mano has never left its original spot. It remains largely untouched.

La Mano de Punta del Este brought worldwide acclaim to Irarrázabal. Tourists frequently photograph it. Reproductions appear on postcards. He created replicas of the sculpture for Madrid in 1987. Another replica stands in the Atacama Desert in Chile. It is called the Mano del Desierto. He also made one in Venice in 1995.

La Brava itself is known as the “fierce beach”. This is due to its rougher waters. The strong waves make it a favorite spot for surfers. During the spring and summer lifeguards provide increased surveillance.

From La Brava you can see Isla de Lobos in the distance. This rocky islet is a popular tourist attraction. The Atlantic Ocean begins here.

As you leave La Brava consider the message of La Mano. Is it a warning? Is it a symbol of life emerging? Perhaps it is both. This sculpture and beach embody the spirit of Punta del Este.
