Did you know that the La Beata de la Purísima de la Cruz Salvat Romero Plaque commemorates a life of devotion? It marks a place connected to a remarkable woman. María Isabel Salvat Romero was born in Madrid in 1926.

The La Beata de la Purísima de la Cruz Salvat Romero Plaque indicates that from 1939 to 1944, she lived in this house. She later became the Superior General of the Company of the Cross. This order was beatified in Seville on September 18, 2010. María’s early life was marked by faith. She attended the school of the Irish Sisters in Madrid. At six years old, she received her First Communion.

During the Spanish Civil War, her family sought refuge in Portugal. This was between 1936 and 1938. It was during this time that she felt her calling to religious life. Despite initial opposition from her father, she pursued her path. In 1944, María joined the Sisters of the Company of the Cross. She took her first vows in 1945. She then took her perpetual vows in 1952.

In 1966, she moved to the Mother House of the congregation in Seville. By 1977, she rose to the position of Superior General. She was re-elected three times. During her time as Superior General, María focused on upholding the order’s charism. This included a renewed devotion to the Gospel and the Catholic Church. She also emphasized Marian and Eucharistic devotion. Each morning, she met with the sick and poor. She served them food and cleaned their clothes.

María was diagnosed with a tumor in 1994. She faced her illness with faith for four years. She died in Seville on October 31, 1998. The process for her canonization began in 2004. The Vatican declared “nihil obstat,” meaning “nothing against.” This gave her the title Servant of God. In 2009, Pope Benedict XVI declared her venerable.

A miracle attributed to her intercession was investigated. A three-year-old girl, Ana Maria Rodriguez Casado, was cured after being in a vegetative state. Pope Benedict XVI approved the miracle in 2010. Cardinal Angelo Amato celebrated her beatification on September 18, 2010. A second miracle was validated in 2013. Pope Francis approved it in 2015. María de la Purísima Salvat Romero was canonized on October 18, 2015.

Her feast day is celebrated on September 18. It marks the date of her beatification. The La Beata de la Purísima de la Cruz Salvat Romero Plaque reminds us of a life dedicated to faith.
