Have you ever felt the profound weight of history beneath your feet? Right here in front of you stands La Altagracia a testament to centuries of change. This isn’t just a building it’s a living chronicle.

La Altagracia’s Basilica Catedral Nuestra Senora de la Altagracia isn’t just a church it is one of the most important religious monuments in the Dominican Republic. It’s the place of invocation for the Virgen de la Altagracia. This isn’t some recent construction. The current basilica replaced an older sanctuary built way back in 1572. The new one was inaugurated on January 21 1971. Think of the countless prayers whispered within its walls over the centuries.

The name La Altagracia meaning “High Grace” is linked to a painting Our Lady of Altagracia. This painting arrived from Spain in the early 16th century. It’s said to have performed numerous miracles. This faith is deeply woven into the fabric of the province. It’s a connection that runs deeper than just religious observance.

The province itself La Altagracia is vast covering 3010.34 square kilometers. It’s unique in that it borders both the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Imagine the sheer scope of this landscape. The Yuma River is its most significant river. Other important rivers are the Duey Maimon Chavon Anamuya Sanate and Yonu rivers. The southern part is relatively flat contrasting with the northern foothills of the Eastern Cordillera. Old Hill the highest point in the province rises to 736 meters.

The area boasts three protected areas. The Eastern National Park is home to abundant biodiversity. It includes Saona Island. There are 112 recorded bird species eight endemic to the country and eleven to the Caribbean. The park’s marine life includes turtles dolphins and manatees. You can explore its hiking trails connecting to caves and springs. The Bavaro and Maimon lagoons are additional protected areas. The Bavaro lagoon shelters the endangered cyprinodon nichollsi fish and migratory ducks.

La Altagracia’s economy is largely driven by tourism. Punta Cana a world-renowned beach destination is located here. This province receives 64% of the flights arriving in the Dominican Republic. This makes it the leading province in tourism. It surpasses even the capital Santo Domingo. The first hotel opened in 1971. It had only 40 guest rooms and 10 cabins. It’s hard to imagine this area now compared to those humble beginnings.

The province has also a thriving cattle ranching and agricultural industry. It’s estimated that approximately 775,000 hectares are devoted to cattle. This makes it the second largest cattle-producing province. Sugar cane and rice are key agricultural products. Corn beans cassava plantain yams and sweet potatoes are also grown extensively. Fishing adds to the coastal economy serving both traditional and tourist markets.
