How can a single statue embody so much suffering? Here at the KZ-Aussenlager Berta I Statue, a chilling silence hangs in the air. It whispers of the horrors endured within the walls of the Rheinmetall Borsig AG factory. The KZ-Aussenlager Berta I Statue stands as a stark reminder of a dark chapter in Dusseldorf’s history. It serves as a memorial to the hundreds of men imprisoned in this subcamp of Buchenwald concentration camp. In November 1943, the SS established this forced labor camp under the code name “Berta”. The factory, once dedicated to producing machinery, became a place of torment. Up to 662 male prisoners were forced to produce rocket parts within these very walls. They toiled under inhumane conditions, their lives deemed worthless by their captors. The prisoners, predominantly from Eastern European countries like Russia, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Lithuania, and Yugoslavia, also included a few Italians, Frenchmen, and German political prisoners. At its peak, the camp held 662 prisoners. The knowledge source reveals a grim statistic. At least 25 men perished within KZ-Aussenlager Berta I. Their suffering ended here, but their stories must not be forgotten. The horrific conditions within the camp are well documented. Initially, there were no provisions for basic hygiene or medical care. A washroom and infirmary weren’t established until the spring of 1944. Beyond the physical hardships, the prisoners endured brutal treatment at the hands of the SS, including documented cases of abuse and executions. Many more, deemed “unfit for work”, were deported back to Buchenwald to face an unknown fate. In March 1945, as the war neared its end, the remaining prisoners were forced on a death march back to Buchenwald. The KZ-Aussenlager Berta I was dissolved, but its legacy of suffering remains etched in the memory of Dusseldorf. The KZ-Aussenlager Berta I Statue serves as a solemn reminder of the lives lost and the atrocities committed. It urges us to remember, to learn, and to never repeat the mistakes of the past.
