Within these walls whispers of centuries past reside. This is the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies. More than just a library it’s a living testament to Korea’s rich intellectual heritage.

Imagine King Jeongjo in 1776. He envisioned a place far beyond a simple repository. He wanted a vibrant center of learning. A place where young scholars could flourish. Kyujanggak was born from that vision. Initially a royal archive safeguarding royal writings seals portraits and genealogical records it blossomed under Jeongjo’s reign into a thriving academic institution. Scholars researched published books and even advised the king himself. Kyujanggak became a cornerstone of his policies. After his death however it largely reverted to its library and printing functions.

A brief revival under King Kojong followed. Then came the Japanese colonial period. All royal institutions were abolished. Kyujanggak’s precious collections were transferred to the Imperial University in Seoul. After liberation these assets eventually found their home at Seoul National University.

The Institute for Korean Studies had a separate but equally rich history. It hosted countless symposia and colloquia on Korean studies. In 2006 a momentous merger occurred. The Institute and the Kyujanggak Archives unified to form the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies. This strengthened Korean studies both within Seoul National University and globally.

Now this esteemed institute unlocks its valuable research materials for the world. It invites scholars from across the globe. The International Center for Korean Studies facilitates this exchange. It fosters collaboration and new perspectives. It ensures that Korean tradition and its modern transformations are viewed through a global lens. The institute itself is structured around several key areas: fundamental research publications education and outreach and crucially internationalization.

The Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies holds an unparalleled collection. Over 260000 volumes of ancient maps paintings calligraphic works and books reside here. Among its treasures are the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty and Seungjeongwon Ilgi the Diaries of the Royal Secretariats. Both are designated national treasures. Their historical significance is immense. They are inscribed on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register.

The Annals a chronological record of Joseon’s history is incredibly detailed. It’s a priceless resource. Seungjeongwon Ilgi offers even more insights into daily life court affairs and state secrets. Its meticulous detail is astonishing.

The institute actively shares its wealth of knowledge. It organizes public programs and exhibitions. Student volunteers help guide visitors. Lectures on research and Korean heritage are offered. The Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies stands as a beacon. It shines a light on Korea’s vibrant past its enduring culture and its bright future. It is a vital bridge connecting Korea’s heritage with the global community. The Kyujanggak Institute truly is a treasure house. A living library of knowledge and a beacon of Korean scholarship.
