Can you feel the weight of the cosmos pressing down around us here at the Kyoto University Kwasan Observatory? This isn’t just a building. It’s a portal to understanding our place in the vast universe.
Kyoto University Kwasan Observatory was established in 1929. It sits on a peak in the Higashiyama mountains. This location is behind the famous Kiyomizu temple. The Kwasan Observatory became the main observing station for the university.
Originally called Kyoto University Observatory, observation conditions worsened near the university due to tramways. A landowner donated the Hanayama grounds to the university. After two years, Kwasan Observatory was built.
Saburo Okura designed Kwasan Observatory. Issei Yamamoto became the first director. He also founded the Oriental Astronomical Association. Yamamoto connected researchers and amateur astronomers.
The History Room was the first building. It corrected the observatory’s clock. Today, it’s a museum. The Main Building has a 9-meter dome. It once held a 30-cm refracting telescope. Later, a 45-cm lens replaced it.
The Annex features an 18-cm refracting telescope. Kyoto University bought it in 1910. It observed Halley’s Comet. The Solar Building is called “Taiyoh-kan.” It has a 70-cm coelostat for solar viewing.
After Hida Observatory’s construction in 1968, Kwasan Observatory became a research station. Here, scientists analyze data. A new building was completed in 1979. It housed a computer room and video data analysis facilities.
Kwasan Observatory boasts several instruments. “Taiyoh-kan” holds a 70-cm coelostat. A 3-D visualization system was installed in 2007. The 18-cm refractor observed Halley’s comet. A solar H-alpha Lyot filter was added in 1999. The 45-cm refractor sits atop the main building. Carl Zeiss manufactured its new lens.
Kwasan Observatory plays an important role today. It analyzes data from Hida Observatory. The museum displays historical instruments. These include telescopes, clocks, and solar spectrum equipment. The observatory also had involvement in solar coronal research and pioneering the study of Martian meteorology.
Though Kyoto University moved most operations elsewhere, Kwasan Observatory remains a “sacred place for amateur astronomy” and continues to be important to the astro-culture of Japan.
