Nestled in the northern hills of Kyoto, overlooking the Kamo River, lies Kyoto Sangyo University. But what if I told you this esteemed institution wasn’t always the sprawling campus you see today? Kyoto Sangyo University’s story begins not with grand halls, but with a vision. A vision held by its founder, the astronomer Toshima Araki. In 1965, amidst a tumultuous period of student movements in Japan, Araki sought to create a university grounded in Japanese tradition. He envisioned a place where students could cultivate high moral character and contribute to the peace and happiness of humankind. Kyoto Sangyo University was thus born, initially with just two faculties: Economics and Science.

From these humble beginnings, Kyoto Sangyo University experienced remarkable growth. By 1969, it had surpassed 10,000 students. Araki, believing in the power of interdisciplinary collaboration, championed the idea of “sangyo”, meaning “industry” or “to produce new things”. He encouraged the exchange and collaboration with different fields. This forward-thinking approach led to the early adoption of technology. In the late 1960s, Kyoto Sangyo University introduced one of the fastest large-scale computers of the time and established one of the first computer science departments in Japan, earning it the nickname “Information Sangyo University”.

Over the years, Kyoto Sangyo University continued to expand its academic offerings and research facilities. New faculties, including Business Administration, Law, Sociology, International Relations, Foreign Studies, Cultural Studies, Information Science and Engineering, and Life Sciences were added. The university’s commitment to research is evident in its various research institutes. These institutes explore diverse topics, from Japanese culture and world affairs to advanced technology and avian influenza. One of the most remarkable facilities is the Koyama Astronomical Observatory, named after the university’s founder. Equipped with one of the largest reflecting telescopes in Japan, the observatory allows researchers and students to explore the cosmos.

Did you know that the university’s central library houses over one million books, DVDs, and electronic journals? Furthermore, it has partnerships with other libraries and institutions, both in Japan and internationally. This provides students with access to a vast network of knowledge. Beyond academics, Kyoto Sangyo University offers a vibrant student life. A wide array of clubs and sports societies cater to diverse interests. From traditional arts like calligraphy and tea ceremony to modern pursuits like filmmaking and electronic music, there’s something for everyone.

Kyoto Sangyo University stands as a testament to Toshima Araki’s vision. It has evolved from a small institution with two faculties to a comprehensive university with a global outlook. As you stand here, on this beautiful campus, remember the spirit of “sangyo” – the production of new value, the pursuit of knowledge. It is this spirit that continues to drive Kyoto Sangyo University forward. It is this spirit that shapes the future leaders who will contribute to a peaceful and prosperous world.
