Remember the tales of emperors and empresses as we approach the Kyoto Imperial Palace Entrance. This is no ordinary entrance. It’s a portal to a time when Kyoto was the heart of Japan. The Kyoto Imperial Palace, or Kyoto Gosho, was home to Japan’s Imperial Family. They lived here until 1868. That’s when the emperor and capital moved to Tokyo.

The palace you see now was rebuilt in 1855. A fire destroyed the earlier structure. The palace complex is enclosed by high walls. These walls guard gates, halls, and gardens. Imagine the emperors Taisho and Showa. Their enthronement ceremonies happened right here in the main hall. Now, Tokyo Imperial Palace hosts these ceremonies.

For years, access to the palace was restricted. Guided tours with reservations were required. Today, the Kyoto Imperial Palace welcomes everyone. You can explore the grounds freely. No prior arrangements are needed. English tours are still available if you want them. Wander through gardens and admire the buildings. Remember, you can’t enter any of them.

The Kyoto Imperial Palace is part of the Kyoto Imperial Park. This park also has the Sento Imperial Palace. Retired emperors used this palace. The Kyoto Omiya Palace is within the Sento Imperial Palace grounds. Members of the royal family stay here when they visit Kyoto.

The Kyoto Sento Imperial Palace was first built in 1630. It was a retirement home for Emperor Gomizuno. Later, it became home for all retired emperors. A fire in 1854 destroyed it. Only the Omiya Palace was rebuilt. The original teahouses remain in the gardens.

The park surrounding the Kyoto Imperial Palace is large. It stretches 1300 meters long and 700 meters wide. Residents and tourists enjoy this green space. You’ll find gravel paths, lawns, and tree groves.

Planning your visit to the Kyoto Imperial Palace is easy. Take the Karasuma Subway Line from Kyoto Station. Get off at Marutamachi or Imadegawa Station. Imadegawa Station is closer to the palace entrance.

The Kyoto Imperial Palace is open at different times. From September to March, it’s open 9:00 to 16:30. From October to February, it closes earlier at 16:00. Make sure to arrive 40 minutes before closing. The palace is closed on Mondays and from December 28 to January 4. Admission is free.

As you pass through the Kyoto Imperial Palace Entrance, think about the history. Envision emperors walking these grounds. Remember that you are walking on a ground that was once the home of Japan’s imperial family. The Kyoto Imperial Palace stands as a testament to Kyoto’s rich past. Its beautiful architecture and serene gardens offer a peaceful escape.
