Founded in 1985 Kyoto Animation’s story began with a husband and wife team Hideaki and Yoko Hatta. Yoko a former painter at Mushi Production brought her artistic skills to Kyoto. Hideaki became the president. Their shared vision built Kyoto Animation into a powerhouse of Japanese animation. The studio’s logo even originates from the kanji for Kyoto.

Kyoto Animation didn’t start at the top. Early years involved subcontracting for other studios. This provided valuable experience and a strong industry reputation. By the mid-90s Kyoto Animation was collaborating with major studios like Gonzo Shin-Ei Animation and Sunrise.

Then came a turning point. In 2003 Kyoto Animation produced its first in-house work the Munto OVA. This marked a significant step towards creative independence. Their first television anime Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu followed that same year. Successes like The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Clannad K-On and many more solidified their position. Kyoto Animation became known for its high production values. Its unique approach included salaried employees instead of freelancers. This fostered a focus on quality over quotas. It also led to the studio receiving praise for its staff treatment. In 2020 Women in Animation honored them with a Diversity Award. This reflects their efforts towards gender balance within the industry.

Tragedy struck in 2019. An arson attack devastated their first studio. This resulted in the tragic loss of 36 lives including directors Yasuhiro Takemoto and Yoshiji Kigami. The attack also injured many others. Despite this devastating event Kyoto Animation showed incredible resilience. They continued to create and produce outstanding animation.
