A 70-cm coelostat. That’s what makes this place special. This is the Kwasan Observatory Solar House. We’re standing before the Taiyoh-kan. Built in 1961 this building is dedicated to the study of the sun.
Kyoto University established the Kwasan Observatory in 1929. It was their main observing station for decades. Later Hida Observatory took over some of that role. Kwasan became a vital research and educational center. Students from all levels learn here.

In 1979 a new building was added. This housed a computer room and a video data analysis room. This shows Kwasan’s adaptation to technological advancements. They’ve embraced modern tools to continue studying the universe. A 3-D visualization system and a 4-D theater were added in 2007.
