Kwai Cung Ao is actually part of the larger Kwai Chung area. Kwai Chung was once called Kwai Chung Tsai. In earlier times, it was a stream. The stream emptied into Gin Drinkers Bay. Today the bay is reclaimed land. The stream is no longer visible.
Kwai Chung is an urban area. It is located within Tsuen Wan New Town. This is in the New Territories of Hong Kong. Together with Tsing Yi Island, Kwai Chung forms part of the Kwai Tsing District.
Traditionally, Kwai Chung is divided. There is Sheung Kwai Chung which means Upper Kwai Chung. Then there is Ha Kwai Chung or Lower Kwai Chung. Administratively, Sheung Kwai Chung is now called North Kwai Chung. Ha Kwai Chung is South Kwai Chung.
In 2000, Kwai Chung had a population of 287000. The area spans 9.93 square kilometers. Kwai Chung includes several areas. These include Kwai Fong, Kwai Hing, Lai King, and Tai Wo Hau. Notably, Kwai Chung hosts part of Hong Kong’s container port.
After World War Two, Kwai Chung became a hub of heavy industry. Factories thrived along the coast. In the 1980s and 1990s, many factories moved to Mainland China. Despite this shift, Kwai Tsing remains Hong Kong’s key port facility. It stands as one of the world’s busiest container terminals.
