Saint Petersburg endured the Siege of Leningrad during World War II. It was one of the deadliest sieges in history. Over one million civilians died. Leningrad was named a Hero City for its resistance.

Today, Saint Petersburg is a major cultural center. It has many museums and theaters. The Historic Centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It attracts millions of tourists every year.
