He was a man who, despite his inherent privilege, refused to turn a blind eye to the injustices that plagued his nation. This courage led him to join the German Resistance, and in 1944 he found himself in the heart of the plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. This was a dangerous game and one that he ultimately lost. In March 1945, he was apprehended by the Gestapo and imprisoned. Fearing torture and the possibility of revealing the identities of his fellow resisters, he chose a tragic end. Instead of succumbing to the Nazis’ barbarity, he threw himself from a third-story window. An act of defiance until the very end. His grave is a quiet testament to his unwavering principles and to the sacrifices made by those who stood against the darkness of that time.
