The man who dared to defy. The grave of Kurt von Plettenberg, a valiant soldier, a dedicated forester, and a fearless resister of Nazi tyranny, lies here in the Bornstedter Friedhof. He was a man of courage, a man of principle, and a man who paid the ultimate price for his beliefs. Born into a family of privilege, he studied law and forestry and later distinguished himself on the battlefield in the First World War. However, he refused to compromise his conscience when the Nazi regime rose to power. He resigned from his prestigious position as a forest director in 1937 after realizing that his values clashed with the regime’s cruel ideology. He was a man who, despite his inherent privilege, refused to turn a blind eye to the injustices that plagued his nation. This courage led him to join the German Resistance, and in 1944 he found himself in the heart of the plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. This was a dangerous game and one that he ultimately lost. In March 1945, he was apprehended by the Gestapo and imprisoned. Fearing torture and the possibility of revealing the identities of his fellow resisters, he chose a tragic end. Instead of succumbing to the Nazis’ barbarity, he threw himself from a third-story window. An act of defiance until the very end. His grave is a quiet testament to his unwavering principles and to the sacrifices made by those who stood against the darkness of that time.
