In 1966, a young man named Kurt R. Schmeller took the reins of Queensborough Community College. He was only 29 years old. He became the college’s third president. Dr. Schmeller’s vision shaped Queensborough for the next 32 years. Right here, at the Kurt R. Schmeller Library, we can see a testament to his legacy. In his very first year, he broke ground on three new buildings. The library, which now bears his name, was one of them. Dr. Schmeller championed access to education. He advocated for students who wouldn’t typically qualify for college admission. He established the Port of Entry program. This innovative program helped foreign students, especially those from China, acclimate to life in the United States. It was the first program of its kind in the country. Dr. Schmeller understood the importance of a well-rounded education. He founded a performing arts series. He also established an art gallery. He even brought Senator Robert Kennedy to campus in 1968 to speak to a packed gymnasium. Sadly, Kennedy was assassinated five months later. The gymnasium was then renamed in his honor. The Kurt R. Schmeller Library isn’t just a repository of books. It’s a hub of learning, teaching, and research. Its mission is to empower students with information literacy skills. The library staff works tirelessly to create a welcoming environment. They provide access to high-quality information resources and technology. They also collaborate with other departments to enhance student learning. So, as you explore the Kurt R. Schmeller Library, remember the legacy of its namesake. Remember Dr. Schmeller’s dedication to education and his vision for a thriving community college.
