Hidden within the tranquil greenery on the southern edge of Münster, lies the Kunsthaus Kannen. A question hangs in the air: what secrets does this unique art gallery hold? Kunsthaus Kannen isn’t just a gallery. It’s a vibrant hub where art studios, a specialist library, an archive, and even a museum shop coexist under one roof. The Kunsthaus Kannen sits on the grounds of the Alexianer Münster GmbH. Since 1996, this haven has showcased contemporary art intertwined with psychiatry, Art Brut, and Outsider Art. The collection features works created by artists/patients right here on site, as well as pieces from across Europe. Kunsthaus Kannen’s name dates back to the 12th century. A bishop’s document from around 1200 mentions an estate called “Cane.” The name’s origin remains uncertain. One theory links it to a former owner, Kannen von Schwarte. Another points to the noble family “von Kannen,” who trace their name back to the “Haus Kannen” estate. Over decades, a vast collection of over 5,000 artworks has emerged. These works, spanning drawings, paintings, collages, prints, installations, sculptures, and more, have been exhibited both nationally and internationally. In 2000, Kunsthaus Kannen received recognition as a “Model project for a community of disabled artists,” receiving funding from the Welfare Foundation of North Rhine-Westphalia. This was a unique distinction in Germany at the time. A spacious, accessible new building was completed at the end of 2000, uniting the studios and exhibition hall under one roof. Besides regular exhibitions, the building hosts project work, workshops, conferences, and lectures exploring art and psychiatry, Outsider Art, and Art Brut. Kunsthaus Kannen offers an inclusive space for artists with and without disabilities or mental illnesses. The studios, exhibitions, a small specialist library, and an art shop selling pictures, postcards, and catalogs welcome all. Fifteen studio spaces across three painting and drawing studios and a workshop provide ample creative space. Under the guidance of trained art therapists, residents from the Alexianer residential area can explore their artistic talents and develop their skills. Workshops further enrich their experience, fostering collaborations with artists from other studios. Kunsthaus Kannen is more than an art gallery; it is a testament to the power of art as a therapeutic and expressive medium.
