It’s a living canvas, constantly evolving with the times. Founded in 1990 by the women of the Exterra XX artist group, it emerged from the nonconformist scene of the former GDR. It has hosted over 160 exhibitions, showcasing 400 artists from around the globe. The gallery spaces, spread across four floors, pulsate with creative energy. From the provocative strokes of Jim Avignon to the thought-provoking sculptures of Stephan Balkenhol, the Kunsthaus Erfurt has embraced a diverse spectrum of artistic expression. In 2008, during an exhibition, the Klub 500 was born. This further solidified the Kunsthaus’s role as a cultural hub, a place where art and community intertwine. A year later, the Kunsthaus orchestrated exhibitions in the vacant former Ministry of the Interior. These exhibitions, “Kunstlawine,” “below the line,” and the “Armella Show,” transformed the space into a dynamic art fair. The Kunsthaus Erfurt also played a pivotal role in shaping the cultural landscape of the city with temporary projects in public spaces. These installations weren’t confined to traditional exhibition halls. They spilled out into Erfurt’s streets, inviting the city itself to become part of the artistic dialogue.
