Here at the Kunsthalle Münster, art becomes an experience. Since 2004 the Kunsthalle Münster has been located in the fifth floor of Speicher II. This historic industrial building is in Münster’s harbor district. Before that, it opened in 1991 as the Städtische Ausstellungshalle Am Hawerkamp. Gail B. Kirkpatrick was the director then.

The Kunsthalle Münster presents national and international contemporary art. These are always changing single and group exhibitions. As a municipal institution without its own collection the Kunsthalle reacts flexibly. It focuses on current trends in art. It also addresses socially relevant themes.

About 800 square meters are available. Individual exhibition formats are developed for this space. They are always accompanied by an extensive program. The Kunsthalle explicitly promotes new artistic productions. It encourages interdisciplinary exchange. It sees itself as a laboratory and discussion platform.

Once a year the Förderpreisausstellung of the Freunde der Kunstakademie Münster is held. It is a guest at the Kunsthalle.

The Kunsthalle Münster is part of the Kulturamt. It is responsible for the program. It also looks after the city of Münster’s public collection. The collection has continually grown with each new edition of the Skulptur Projekte. It includes works by Daniel Buren and Claes Oldenburg. You can also find art from Donald Judd and Rebecca Horn. Per Kirkeby, Maria Nordman and Oscar Tuazon are represented as well.

Since 2018 Gerhard Richter’s installation complements the collection. It is called Zwei Graue Doppelspiegel für ein Pendel. It is located in the Dominikanerkirche. Since 2020 Residence NRW has been affiliated with the Kunsthalle Münster. It is a scholarship program for artists and curators.

Merle Radtke took over as director of the Kunsthalle Münster on July 1 2018. Her program opened on December 14 2018. It featured a solo exhibition by Mary Beth Edelson. Edelson was an American artist.

The Kunsthalle sees itself as a production center and laboratory. Here, you can experience art sensually. The Kunsthalle Münster is a place for exchanging ideas. It is a space for theoretical reflection.

There is a diverse program. It includes talks and lectures. You can also take guided tours. Film screenings, symposia and performances enhance the experience. The Kunsthalle promotes debate on contemporary art. It inspires discussion on topical issues.

Past special exhibitions have included Colour Me Blind. It explored painting in the age of computer games and comics in 2000. Night on Earth featured photography and video art in 2001. Firewall was exhibited in 2004.
