How did Kunnerwitz transform from a modest settlement to a vibrant part of Görlitz? The story of Kunnerwitz unfolds right here, in the southwestern shadow of the Landeskrone hill. Its history dates back to 1228. It was first mentioned as an estate of the “Lords of Landeskrone.” However, it wasn’t until 1404 that Kunnerwitz appeared in official records as a Slavic settlement. The heart of this quaint village was marked by the prominent “Knight’s Estate at the Landeskrone.” Kunnerwitz, however, wasn’t always a bustling suburb. In the mid-19th century, it was a modest village with a population of around 40. Among its inhabitants was the miller Johann Christoph Tzschanter. He owned the iconic Bock windmill, erected on the southwestern edge of the village in 1806. Sadly, the windmill met its demise in 1891. It was dismantled following severe storm damages in 1887 and 1889. The landscape of Kunnerwitz saw another change in the late 20th century. Following the depopulation of Deutsch-Ossig in the 1980s, Kunnerwitz experienced a surge in its population, becoming a sought-after residential area. Finally, in 1999, Kunnerwitz officially became part of Görlitz. Today, with a population exceeding 500, Kunnerwitz thrives as a tranquil suburb. It carries a rich history within its charming streets and the architectural gem of the Church of the Redeemer.
