Did you ever hear of a train station that led to nowhere? Well, almost nowhere. Kuluksen rautatieasema, a seemingly unassuming station nestled near Olkkajärvi, has just such a story. Kuluksen rautatieasema first opened its doors on December 15, 1932. It was a vital link on the Laurila–Kelloselkä line, a remote stretch of railway in Rovaniemi, Finland. Kuluksen rautatieasema sat roughly 23 kilometers from Rovaniemi station and about 62 kilometers from Kemijärvi station. The station wasn’t grand, just a simple, board-clad building. It was likely designed by Jarl Ungern, and its style is typical of those built after the Lapland War. The station was more than just a building. It had sidings on both sides of the main track. On the north side, a half-length siding, known as a “napero,” branched off. It stretched from the east side of the station building to the eastern edge of the yard, originally used for loading. A longer siding, about 600 meters, lay south of the main track. This one could accommodate passing trains, in addition to loading cargo. Kuluksen rautatieasema even had a 1.5-kilometer branch line leading to a port. Sadly, this was dismantled in 1946. Kuluksen rautatieasema was initially isolated, with no road access. A road was finally built in the 2000s. The station’s life, however, was relatively short-lived. It was unmanned from 1970, and freight traffic ceased in 1976. Passenger services sputtered to a halt on May 31, 1992. Finally, Kuluksen rautatieasema was officially decommissioned on January 9, 2005. Today, the station building is privately owned. The tracks and sidings are gone. But the story of Kuluksen rautatieasema, a small station that once pulsed with the rhythm of trains and trade, remains. A quiet reminder of a bygone era in this remote corner of Finland. And an interesting piece of trivia: the railway line passes less than nine kilometers north of the Arctic Circle from Kuluksen rautatieasema towards Kemijärvi.
