Fifty years. That’s how long the Jewish Kultusgemeinde in Essen has stood on Sedanstrasse. Fifty years of resilience. Fifty years of community. Right here before you stands a testament to that enduring spirit.
This unassuming building. This is the current home of the Kultusgemeinde. It wasn’t always so. Before this structure there was another. A grand synagogue. The Old Synagogue. A magnificent Byzantine and Art Nouveau masterpiece. It was one of the largest and most beautiful in pre-war Germany.
The Old Synagogue’s story began in 1858. A growing Jewish community in Essen needed a larger place to worship. So Rabbi Salomon Samuel led the charge. Architect Edmund Korner created a stunning design. The synagogue was consecrated in 1913. It was a centre of Jewish life for 25 years. It could even hold over 1500 people for services or concerts. The interior was breathtaking. Deep blue tiles sparkled with gold. Mosaics and stained glass told stories of Jewish tradition.
Then came Kristallnacht. 1938. The night of broken glass. The Old Synagogue was set ablaze. The interior was destroyed. But miraculously the outer walls survived. The building stood. A scarred but resilient survivor of a horrific event.
After the war it became a museum of industrial design. Then a fire damaged it. Finally in the 1980s the city decided to restore it. To make it a memorial a museum a place of remembrance. The restoration was completed in 1988. It became a place to remember the Jewish community lost in the Holocaust.
The present Kultusgemeinde building was constructed between 1958 and 1959. This smaller building now serves Essen’s Jewish community. It is a continuation of a legacy that began with the Old Synagogue. The Old Synagogue and this building both represent the spirit of Essen’s Jewish community. A spirit of resilience faith and community. This building stands as a reminder of that history. And of the enduring power of hope. A place where history comes alive. A place of worship. A place of remembrance. A place of community. The Kultusgemeinde.
