Elevated on a granite pedestal, the Kugelstoßerin commands attention. This bronze sculpture captures the very essence of athleticism and focus. The Kugelstoßerin, or “Shot Putter,” depicts a female athlete, poised on the brink of action. She holds the shot put aloft in her right hand, her gaze fixed on her target. The sculptor, Ludwig Engelhardt, has masterfully frozen this moment of intense concentration.

The Kugelstoßerin is more than just a statue. It is a tribute to Johanna Lüttge, a world-renowned shot putter who won a silver medal at the 1960 Rome Olympics. Engelhardt created the sculpture in 1966, capturing Lüttge’s strength and determination. The statue made its debut at the VI. Art Exhibition in Dresden in 1967, originally titled “Johanna Lüttge (Shot Putter).” It later appeared in other exhibitions, including “Art and Sport” in Leipzig (1969) and “Sculpture and Flowers” in Treptower Park (1971). Finally, in 1980, the Kugelstoßerin found its permanent home here in Hartriegelstraße. A second casting of the statue resides in Rostock, placed in front of the Campus Library in 2010.

The Kugelstoßerin stands larger than life, clothed in a close-fitting athletic top. Her hair is cut in a practical, shoulder-length style. Her pose is static, yet full of potential energy. The slight bend in her knees, the angle of her torso, and the focused expression on her face all speak to the imminent release of power. The bronze surface of the sculpture is textured, adding depth and a sense of realism. The simple granite pedestal provides a stark contrast to the dynamic figure, further emphasizing the athlete’s form. Engelhardt’s work is not overly detailed. Instead, he focuses on capturing the essential lines and forms of the body, conveying a sense of strength and grace.

The Kugelstoßerin serves as a reminder of both individual achievement and the power of art. It captures a specific moment in time, immortalizing the dedication and skill of an exceptional athlete. It’s a powerful piece of art that transcends mere representation, inviting us to reflect on the human capacity for physical and mental prowess.
