Carl Eduard Uhlig’s vision took shape in 1889. He built the Krystallpalast, a beacon of entertainment on Klaffenbacher Hauptstrasse. Initially called “Gasthaus Klaffenbach”, the Krystallpalast quickly became a local favorite. In 1891, a double-decker carousel, known as “Hähnel’s Riding School”, graced its gardens during the Kirchweihfest. The Krystallpalast grounds transformed into a vibrant fairground. Stalls offered various goods, games, and tests of strength. In 1894, Friedrich Hermann Fankhänel acquired the establishment. Records reveal the dimensions of the ground floor’s guest room and billiard room, hinting at the Krystallpalast’s growing capacity. Upstairs, elegant Gesellschaftszimmer (social rooms) provided space for gatherings. The local council, recognizing the increasing traffic and the upcoming Würschnitztalbahn railway, readily granted Fankhänel a full license for his venture. By 1898, Herrmann Albin Uhlig took ownership. He secured permission for a wide range of activities. These included serving spirits, hosting public dances and musical performances, and offering accommodation. The Krystallpalast boasted two guest rooms, two social rooms, a dance hall, a smaller Saalstube (hall room), and a garden adorned with three newly built verandas. Albin Uhlig’s four-decade tenure marked a golden era for the Krystallpalast. It became the heart of Klaffenbach’s social and cultural life. The “Radfahr-Verein Wanderlust Klaffenbach” cycling club adopted the Krystallpalast as its headquarters. Its hall served as a venue for competitions. The Krystallpalast hosted countless events. These ranged from the Schützenverein’s Königsessen (king’s feast) to the Männergesangsverein’s concerts and even the “Gut Heil” gymnastics club’s practice sessions. Albin Uhlig’s entrepreneurial spirit extended to organizing annual Kirmestanz (fair dances), Fastnachtsrummel (carnival revelry), costume balls, and various dance events. He promoted the Krystallpalast as a prime destination for Chemnitz residents.
