On the north side, you’ll find the Kronverk, a fortification built to protect the fortress. The Kronverksky Strait isn’t very wide, only about 50 meters, and not very deep, just about 4 meters. But its significance runs deep. Imagine the year 1703. A wooden bridge, the first bridge built in Saint Petersburg, spans the Kronverksky Strait. This was the Ioannovsky Bridge. Over the years, it was reinforced and rebuilt. It stands today, a testament to the city’s enduring spirit. The Kronverksky Strait also played a role in a darker chapter of Russian history. In 1826, five Decembrists were executed on the eastern rampart of the Kronverk, near the strait. Their sacrifice is marked by an obelisk. Today, the Kronverksky Strait offers a peaceful view, a place for leisurely walks. But its waters hold the echoes of battles, executions, and the constant struggle for power. As you stand here, imagine the ghosts of those who came before you, the soldiers who defended the fortress, the prisoners who mourned their lost freedom.
