Slipping on the icy cobblestones, a young woman tumbled, her hand instinctively reaching out. Instead of solid ground, her fingers met the chilling rush of the Dreisam, the frigid water momentarily stealing her breath. She had fallen into a Bächle, one of Freiburg’s iconic water channels, and legend had it, she was now destined to marry a Freiburger. Right before you stands Kronenbrücke, a bridge intimately connected to these charming, yet sometimes treacherous, streams. Kronenbrücke isn’t just a bridge; it’s a vital artery of Freiburg im Breisgau, carrying over 20,000 vehicles daily. This makes it one of the busiest bridges in the city. It connects the Altstadt, the historic old town, to the bustling B31, a major road leading towards both Umkirch and the scenic Black Forest. The current Kronenbrücke is a relatively new structure. It was completed in 2018, replacing an older “twin bridge” of oval design, sometimes jokingly referred to as the “Elefantenklo,” or elephant’s toilet. But the history of crossings at this point goes back much further. Before the twin bridge, there stood the Friedrichsbrücke, a graceful iron bridge named after Grand Duke Frederick I of Baden. This bridge, built in 1903, replaced an even earlier iron bridge from 1869 that succumbed to the powerful floods of the Dreisam. Even before the iron bridges, a simple wooden footbridge existed here in the Middle Ages. It served as a crucial link on the trade route connecting Frankfurt to Basel. Today’s Kronenbrücke is more than just a thoroughfare. It’s also a key component of the city’s modern tram network, with the Line 5 now traversing its length, further solidifying its importance to Freiburg’s infrastructure. As you cross Kronenbrücke, remember the many crossings that came before it, each a testament to Freiburg’s enduring connection to the Dreisam. And ladies, watch your step near the Bächle, lest you, like the young woman in our story, find yourself unexpectedly engaged to a Freiburger!
