“Do you see the silent sentinels surrounding us?” The Kriegerdenkmal in Berghofen stands before you a testament to the sacrifices made in wars past. This memorial initially honored those who fell in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. It first stood on vacant land along Berghofer Strasse. Later it was rebuilt in 1911 in the village center. The towering eagle symbolized vigilance and remembrance. It also honored the fallen of the First World War starting in 1914. By the year’s end 37 Berghofen men fathers and sons were mourned.

The Kriegerdenkmal held a prominent position in the heart of Berghofen. It stood at the junction of Berghofer Strasse and Berghofer Schulstrasse. Locals affectionately referred to it as “Ecke Drei Bäume” meaning Corner of Three Trees. However in 1934 the monument had to be moved. It was relocated to the more secluded Ehrental in Berghofer Wald. Five additional steles were added. They commemorated the fallen of the First World War naming each soldier. The victims of the Second World War remained nameless. A simple stone plaque was dedicated to their memory near the eagle stele.

The move effectively shifted the memorial from the village center to the periphery. It was no longer visible in daily life. You can only see the Kriegerdenkmal during a walk through the forest. This secluded location did not diminish its importance. Extensive renovation work began in 2014 thanks to the Berghofen Heimatverein. This restoration included the path and surrounding area. Benches were added to enhance the area. Unfortunately vandalism has marred its beauty. The monument is currently in need of repair.

Despite its physical challenges the Kriegerdenkmal serves a vital purpose. It stands as a reminder of the suffering caused by war violence and terror. Every year on Volkstrauertag Remembrance Day a memorial service is held. The Heimatverein Berghofen organizes this solemn event. Wreaths are laid to honor the fallen. This memorial holds an important place in the collective memory of the people of Berghofen. It stands as a stark reminder of the costs of conflict and a beacon for peace. Let us take a moment of quiet reflection to honor those who gave their lives.
