Germany’s heart beats strong here at the Kriegerdenkmal 1914–1918. This memorial, erected in 1936, whispers tales of a tumultuous past. The Kriegerdenkmal 1914–1918 stands as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of the First World War on Hamburg. It was designed by Richard Kuöhl, a well-known sculptor and architect. The monument has been a source of controversy over the years, particularly in the post-WWII era. Left-wing protesters often targeted the Kriegerdenkmal 1914–1918, defacing it with paint and causing damage. Some of the figures on the frieze, depicting a marching column of soldiers, still bear the scars of this vandalism. Missing helmet edges, noses, bayonets, and fingers are a testament to this turbulent period. The inscription on the Kriegerdenkmal 1914–1918 reads: “Deutschland muss leben und wenn wir sterben müssen”. This translates to “Germany must live, even if we must die.” This powerful statement reflects the prevailing sentiment of the time. The Kriegerdenkmal 1914–1918 serves as a memorial to the Infanterie-Regiment Hamburg (2. Hanseatisches) No. 76. This regiment, along with its Reserve counterpart, suffered over 6,000 casualties in the Great War. Their battles took them from Belgium and Langemarck to the Somme, Guillemont, and Combles. A nearby stone wall lists the locations of the regiment’s engagements. These names, etched in stone, bear witness to the brutal realities of war: Lüttich, Mons, Marne, Ourcq, Moulins s.T., Les Eparges, Somme, Arras, Flandern, Cambrai, Grosse Schlacht (March 1918), Monchy-Bapaume, and Valenciennes. For R.I.R.76, the list continues: Noyon, Bouvraignes, Souchez, Givenchy, Somme, La Bassée, Somme, Ypern, Arras, Flandern, Kemmel, Canay sur Matz, and Le Câteau. The Kriegerdenkmal 1914–1918 is more than just a monument. It’s a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the First World War and the enduring legacy of conflict.
