It stands as a testament to the 1,595 souls lost in the First World War. The Kriegerdenkmal 1./2. Weltkrieg isn’t just a monument. It’s a story etched in stone, a narrative of loss and remembrance. In the 1920s, this section of the Nordfriedhof transformed into a field of honor. Each fallen soldier isn’t marked by a towering headstone. Instead, a basalt lava plate bearing their name and dates lies embedded in the grass. Groups of crosses made from Michelnauer basalt tuff punctuate the field, adding to the solemn atmosphere. The centerpiece of the Kriegerdenkmal 1./2. Weltkrieg is a Muschelkalk monument. Sculptor Hermann Nolte, following the design of architect Hermann Görke, brought it to life in 1921. The style is neoclassical. The depiction of the fallen soldiers is heroic. They clutch oak leaf wreaths, reminiscent of ancient warriors. A central figure of Jesus Christ welcomes them with open arms. The terraced memorial is framed by a Muschelkalk wall. This wall has weathered time and requires restoration. Many of the plates have loosened and cracks have appeared in the masonry. The first step in its restoration was the removal of dense ivy growth. An expert then assessed the exposed wall to develop a restoration plan. The German War Graves Commission is funding this crucial work, ensuring that Kriegerdenkmal 1./2. Weltkrieg continues to tell its story for generations to come.
