You see it, right in front of you. This imposing structure, a beacon of tranquility and remembrance in the heart of Goerlitz, is the Krematorium. Built in 1913, it was the first crematorium in the entire region of Silesia. Imagine, back then, that this was the first place in the area where people could choose cremation. Now, look at the building itself. It’s been designed in a distinctive Art Nouveau style, which was all the rage back then. Notice the grand hall, accessible via a wide staircase, offering a breathtaking view of the cityscape. This hall is the stage for final farewells. Interestingly, in 2003, a modern extension was added to the north side. It serves as a preparation area for the farewell ceremonies. But the Krematorium holds more than just solemn functions. On its 100th anniversary, in 2013, the crematorium’s staff curated a fascinating exhibition on the history of cremation. You will find it in the old ceremony hall, and it includes artifacts and information about 100 years of the crematorium and funeral customs. This is a reminder of the long history of this institution and the stories that it holds within its walls.
