Hidden within the Royal Palace compound in Phnom Penh lies the magnificent Silver Pagoda. Also known as Wat Preah Keo its name originates from its remarkable floor. Five tonnes of gleaming silver cover more than 5000 tiles. This breathtaking temple wasn’t always as opulent as it is today. Originally constructed of wood in 1892 under King Norodom it underwent a significant transformation in 1962. No expense was spared in its reconstruction. The result is a dazzling display of religious art and priceless artifacts.

The Silver Pagoda’s history is intertwined with Cambodia’s tumultuous past. It miraculously survived the Khmer Rouge regime a testament to its cultural significance. While many of its contents were lost or destroyed during the Vietnamese invasion and subsequent turmoil what remains is simply stunning. The sheer extravagance is breathtaking.

Inside you’ll find a collection of exquisite Buddha statues crafted from precious metals. The most captivating is a life-sized solid-gold Buddha adorned with 2086 diamonds. The largest diamond weighs a hefty 25 carats. This magnificent Buddha is a symbol of Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage. Another highlight is the Emerald Buddha a remarkable sculpture possibly made of baccarat crystal. It sits high on a gilded pedestal radiating an ethereal glow.

Dozens of golden Buddhas stand sentinel alongside precious gifts presented to Cambodian monarchs by foreign heads of state.
