In 1901, a palatial structure arose on the newly constructed Lech Canal. This was no ordinary building. This was Kraftwerk Gersthofen, the first of three hydroelectric power plants. Kraftwerk Gersthofen marked the beginning of a new era. It provided comprehensive electricity to Bavarian Swabia. Imagine Prince Ludwig of Bavaria visiting the construction site on May 13, 1901. He came in place of the 80-year-old Prince Regent Luitpold. This visit underscored the importance of this technological marvel. Kraftwerk Gersthofen wasn’t just a power plant. It was a symbol of progress. The single-storey, elongated building showcased historicist architecture. Its exposed brick facade featured pilasters and white decorative elements. Round arched windows with steel rungs added to its unique charm. The eastern part of the building had a flat roof, while the western part boasted a two-storey structure with a curved hipped roof. The 1907 addition over the lock mirrored the western section. Inside, the machine hall housed the heart of the operation. Filigree riveted steel truss girders supported the 10.5-meter high, 13-meter wide space, complete with a crane runway at 8 meters. Initially, five turbines processed 16 cubic meters of water per second. Later, after the Meitingen power plant was built, new Kaplan tube turbines and AEG generators replaced the old ones. Today, five 1963 AEG generators still hum within Kraftwerk Gersthofen. The original turbines continue their work, their design a testament to engineering ingenuity. Kraftwerk Gersthofen stands as a testament to Augsburg’s tradition of sustainability. It represents the evolution from small-scale water wheels to highly efficient turbines. It showcases the shift from mechanical power transfer to electrification. The power plant embodies the move towards decentralized run-of-river power plants. It stands as a global role model for the use of renewable energy. Kraftwerk Gersthofen remains largely in its original condition. It’s a living museum of technical development. This remarkable power plant is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a story of innovation, a symbol of progress, and a beacon of sustainability.
