In 1923, a seed of hope was planted in the valley of the Korle Lagoon. This seed was the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. Today, we stand before a mighty tree grown from that seed. Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, a name synonymous with healing and progress, opened its doors on October 9, 1923. Established under the watchful eye of Governor Sir Frederick Gordon Guggisberg, it was initially intended as a general hospital. It was meant to serve the health needs of the local people. The name “Korle Bu” itself, drawn from the Ga language, beautifully translates to “the valley of the Korle Lagoon.” Korle Bu quickly blossomed, exceeding its initial 200-bed capacity due to the growing population and the efficacy of its treatments. By 1953, the hospital was bursting at the seams with patients seeking care. The government formed a task force to analyze the situation. This led to the construction of new Maternity, Medical, Surgical, and Child Health blocks. The expansion boosted Korle Bu’s capacity to 1,200 beds. A pivotal moment in Korle Bu’s history arrived in 1962. The University of Ghana Medical School was established, solidifying the hospital’s status as a teaching institution. Now, Korle Bu stands as a beacon of medical excellence, boasting 2,000 beds and 21 clinical and diagnostic departments. It also houses three Centers of Excellence. These centers draw patients not just from Ghana, but also from neighboring countries like Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Togo, and Benin. The hospital’s daily life is a whirlwind of activity, with an average outpatient attendance of 1,500 and around 250 inpatient admissions. Korle Bu Teaching Hospital doesn’t just treat; it teaches. It nurtures the next generation of medical professionals. It pushes the boundaries of medical science. From its humble beginnings as a 200-bed general hospital, Korle Bu has become a sprawling medical complex. It has become a symbol of hope and healing in the heart of Accra.
