Whispers of reverence echo within these walls. Korkalovaaran kappeli stands as a testament to faith and architectural vision. This chapel is more than just a building. It is a sanctuary that embraces all who enter.

Korkalovaaran kappeli was built in 1988. Its story began with an architectural competition. Out of 122 proposals, Pekka Littow’s design won. His creation is known as “Pinjan alla” meaning under the pine tree. Littow captured the spirit of the surrounding landscape.

Step inside Korkalovaaran kappeli. Notice how the roof beams curve like tree branches. This design creates a sense of awe. It reminds us of the strength and beauty of nature. The chapel’s architect wanted the space to feel as if you were standing under the branches of a great tree.

Look toward the altar. A bronze relief titled “Toivo” meaning hope adorns the wall. Taina Karvonen and Kaarina Ruikka created this beautiful artwork. The relief complements the chapel’s serene atmosphere.

In 2013, Korkalovaaran kappeli celebrated its 25th anniversary. During the celebration, Henry Rantala shared Littow’s words. The people within the chapel are its colors. Rantala explained that the colors represent the diversity, gifts, and actions of the community.

Ilmo Pulkamo spoke about the altar relief at the anniversary. The relief depicts Ukko-Nooa with his hands raised. This symbolizes hope for a new beginning. It recalls the biblical story of Noah releasing a dove after the flood. The dove’s return with an olive branch signaled new life. The shape of the raised hands is mirrored in the design of the chapel’s organ. This reinforces the theme of hope and renewal.

The celebration concluded with a symbolic gesture. Attendees received pinja seeds. They were invited to enjoy God’s word and communion under the metaphorical pine. This symbolized spiritual nourishment for their journey.

Korkalovaaran kappeli is more than a local landmark. It embodies the community’s spirit. It offers a tranquil space for reflection. Its architecture and art invite contemplation. It reminds us of hope. The chapel stands as a welcoming beacon for all.
