Korean War Memorial

“The Forgotten War,” some called it. Yet, here at the Korean War Memorial in San Antonio, the memories are etched in bronze and stone. This memorial, a solemn tribute near the Municipal Auditorium at Veterans Memorial Plaza, honors the sons and daughters of San Antonio who served in a conflict often overshadowed by history. The Korean War, a conflict that erupted just five years after the end of World War II, claimed the lives of over 160,000 individuals. Many more were injured or went missing. The memorial’s centerpiece, a powerful bronze sculpture, depicts two soldiers peering from a shared foxhole. Their stance, eerily reminiscent of World War I trench warfare, speaks volumes about the harsh realities faced on the Korean Peninsula from 1950 to 1953. The Korean War Memorial doesn’t glorify war. Instead, it invites contemplation, urging us to remember the human cost of preserving freedom. It serves as a poignant reminder, especially in its serene setting near the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, that the true heroes of any war are those who serve, sacrifice, and strive for peace. Their stories, like the memory of the Korean War itself, deserve to be remembered, honored, and never forgotten.
