Did Korea National University of Arts always grace Seokgwan-dong? No. Its journey began in Jangchung-dong, within the walls of the former National High School of Korean Traditional Music. Picture Seoul in 1992. The Korea National University of Arts, or K-Arts as it’s affectionately known, was taking its first breaths. Offices were set up, a flurry of activity anticipating the grand opening in 1993. This wasn’t just any university. It was the nation’s sole national arts university, a beacon envisioned by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Their aim was ambitious: to cultivate world-class artists, putting South Korea on the global arts map. K-Arts Seokgwan-dong Campus, as we know it today, wasn’t the original home. The university’s story is one of growth and expansion. It started with the School of Music in 1993. Then, other schools followed: Drama, Film, TV & Multimedia, Dance, Visual Arts, and Korean Traditional Arts. Imagine the campus buzzing with aspiring musicians, actors, filmmakers, dancers, and visual artists. Each discipline contributing to the vibrant tapestry of K-Arts. The move to Seokgwan-dong in 1996 marked a significant milestone. The university finally had a permanent home, a place to nurture its burgeoning artistic community. Today, K-Arts Seokgwan-dong Campus is a testament to that vision. A place where creativity flourishes. It offers bachelor’s and master’s programs. It also has a unique pre-school program for gifted young artists. K-Arts even offers specialized interschool divisions like Arts Management, Creation of Narratives, and Musicals. This speaks to the university’s commitment to a holistic arts education. K-Arts Seokgwan-dong Campus isn’t just a place of learning. It’s a launchpad for some of South Korea’s most celebrated artists. Alumni like filmmaker Na Hong-jin, director of “The Chaser,” and pianist Yunchan Lim, winner of the prestigious Van Cliburn Award, started their journeys here. So, as you stand before Korea National University of Arts Seokgwan-dong Campus, remember the vision. Remember the journey. This is more than just a campus. It’s a crucible of creativity, shaping the future of Korean art.
